Train the Trainers: Become the Trainer Your Trainees Deserve

Most endoscopists learn to train by watching others train. Few have ever had their own training technique observed, deconstructed, and improved by experts in education methodology. This two-day course changes that.

Over two intensive days at UZ Gent, a small group of trainers will perform live endoscopy cases under the direct observation of internationally recognised super trainers. But the focus is not on the procedure — it is on how you train. Every case is followed by immediate structured video review, where your training approach is analysed using the conscious competence framework, and you receive personalised feedback on how to become a more effective trainer.

A pre-course webinar one week prior (1 June 2026) establishes the educational framework — conscious competence, cognitive load, training language, and structured feedback — so that the two days can be fully dedicated to live case-based training with video review.

What Makes This Course Different

  • Super trainers observe the trainer, not the trainee — the focus is on how you deliver training, not on the procedure itself
  • Video review after every case — immediate structured debrief using continuous video recording to identify teaching moments and improve your feedback technique
  • Small group format (4–6 trainees) — every participant gets individual case time and personalised coaching from the super trainers
  • Two disciplines, one methodology — Day 1 colonoscopy, Day 2 therapeutic (EMR, POEM, ESD), demonstrating how training approach must adapt to procedural complexity
  • Video review as a training tool — learn how to integrate continuous video recording into your routine training practice

Programme Overview

Pre-Course Webinar — Monday 1 June 2026, 19:00–20:30 CET

Live online session establishing the educational framework: conscious competence, cognitive load, training terminology, polypectomy classification alignment, and how to use video review to maximise training impact.

Day 1: Colonoscopy Train the Trainers — 10 June 2026

4–5 live colonoscopy cases with structured video review after each case. Trainers perform colonoscopy with trainees while super trainers observe and coach the training technique. Non-propofol sedation preferred to allow patient repositioning as a training element.

09:00–09:15Day 1 Briefing: Objectives, Roles & Using the Imager
09:15–12:30Live Colonoscopy Cases 1–3 with Video Review/Debrief
13:15–15:30Live Colonoscopy Cases 4–5 with Video Review/Debrief
15:30–16:30Group Reflection: What Did We Learn About Training Today?

Day 2: Therapeutic Train the Trainers — 11 June 2026

4 therapeutic cases progressing in complexity from EMR through POEM to ESD. Each case followed by video review focusing on how training approach must adapt as procedural complexity increases.

09:00–09:15Day 2 Briefing: Therapeutic Decision-Making Framework
09:15–12:30EMR Cases 1–2 with Video Review/Debrief

Video Review: The Central Theme

In the era of continuous endoscopic video recording, video review is the most powerful and underused tool available to endoscopy trainers. This course teaches you how to use it effectively:

  • How to select teaching moments from continuous recordings
  • Structuring the debrief: trainer self-reflection first, then structured feedback
  • Integrating video review into routine training lists — not as a special event
  • Comparing training approaches: using video to see how different trainers handle the same moment
